This article says to just get the cheapest thing you can stand. You guys have any thoughts about brands or features that are a must have?
I think I like the idea of going without box springs. Is that a bad idea?

Julie and I bought one up there. We just went to a Matress store and tested them all. We found one that fit the price range and felt right when we laid on it.
Well, for what it’s worth, you recently tried a bed without a box springs when you stayed with us. That mattress is about 20 years old but sleeps pretty great on the low-profile, slat bed frame. Or, at least, I think so.
I do have some back muscle problems that a firm mattress seems to help (which is mentioned in that article briefly). Otherwise, I tend to agree with the author. Paying more than a few hundred dollars for a mattress doesn’t get you much of anything in return. Go for the queen size instead of the full, though.
Hmm… we had been pretty set on getting a full. What are your reasons for going with a queen size? Just more elbow room?
Ohyeah, and the bed we slept on at your house was super-comfortable.
I agree with Jason. The Queen size is worth the money. You don’t feel like your on top of each other. If you’re a roller, then you don’t roll over the other person.
When we used to use a full, we though moving up to a Queen was extravagant. Now, with two dogs, I feel like I have about 12″ at the edge of the bed to call my own. Even if it weren’t for the dogs, I don’t think I could go back to just a full.
I hate to sound like the ugly-American who thinks that bigger is always better, but in this case I’d definitely recommend the super-size.
Scott and I bought a Restonic pillowtop in queen size (which, incidentally, you’ve slept on as well), and additionally purchased “extenders” or “adapters” to hold the queen mattress since the antique bed frame we inherited is a full size. It’s well worth it, as it doesn’t take up that much more space in the room, and it affords a much less crowded feel as it’s not only wider but longer. Only problem I’ve found with the pillowtop is that it’s necessary to purchase extra deep fitted sheets.
As well, while typing this comment, Scott asked what I was responding to, and I told him that you’d asked for recommendations on buying a mattress. His only words were “queen size”–no mention of brands or firmness. Seriously–just be sure to put some nice queen-sized bed-clothes on your registry.
Queen-size. No box. That’s what I slept on for years, and that’s what I’m back to now. You guys can come over and try the fit and feel if you want.
I worked at a bed co. for a while – we sold memory foam products… and they are awesome! You should buy a normal – not super expensive mattress without a pillowtop. The pillow top part wears out relatively fast. Find a 2.5 -3 in thick memory foam topper pad to put over the regular mattress. Since it’s not part of the bed, it’s easy to replace when / if it gets old. And definitely queen size…
Chris and I just bought a QUEEN (in case no one has told you yet, get one) Simmons Beautyrest (cause I am beauty defined). It has a memory foam top on it and is awesome. We got it and the box springs delivered all for under $1,000…
By the way, Chris and I are extremely happy for you and Megan and moving to VA sounds like a great deal. And if the company is going to fly you up and wine and dine then you know they’re not some cheap ass company and are willing to pay for some top quality employees, which I know you will be.
Ill add my 2 cents here – seeing as I love sleep and all – In my experience get the biggest one you can. Amy and i used a full size for the first two years , and while it worked, it got small . we now have a king size , granted its friggin huge, it works nicely. I think its a Simmons , I know its a pillow top ( pillow top good, very good ) and as long as it gets flipped every 6 mnths its great. Looks like you guys will be about 3 hours away – If you need any help, just let me know -
